DepEd XI to recognize LGUs, programs in universalizing literacy


DAVAO CITY, May 24 (PIA) - - The Department of Education XI (Deped 11) is now in search for best practices in universalizing literacy in Davao region for the 2022 National Literacy Awards (NLA).


According to Deped 11, NLA is recognizing local government units, non-government and private organizations, and academic institutions, whose literacy programs help alleviate poverty, provide livelihood opportunities, address welfare needs, promote freedom, and made education facilities accessible.


In 2012 under the highly-urbanized city category, the City Government of Davao got the NLA Hall of Fame for its Barangay empowerment, Academe, Resources, Peace and Order and Governance (BAROG) program.


Wavering the BAROG program, Davao City placed first in 2008, 2010, and 2012.


Aside from Davao City, the City Government of Tagum also entered the NLA Hall of Fame in 2011 for its various literacy programs that won in 2001, 2008, and 2010.


Among the literacy programs of Tagum that were highlighted was the Peace Management Literacy and Continuing Education through Night Market, which also bagged bronze medal in the King Sejong Literacy Prize of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO).


For this year, nominations for Outstanding LGUs, and Outstanding Literacy Program are accepted by Deped XI until June 3, 2022.


The NLA is a biennal program of the Literacy Coordinating Council that started in 1994 in conjunction with the celebration of the National Literacy Week and International Literacy Day. (PIA11, Michael Uy)

More NPAs surrender in DavNor

DAVAO DEL NORTE, Nov. 23 (PIA) – More than 30 former members of the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People's Army (CPP-NPA) recently surrendered to government troops in the Province of Davao Del Norte with their firearms turned over to the 10th Infantry AGILA Division of  the Philippine Army. Parents urged to register children to Safe Davao QR before vax

DAVAO CITY, February 22—(PIA) A local vaccine czar urged parents to register first their children aged five to eleven to the SAFEDAVAO QR before they can go to vaccine sites for inoculation. Dr. Josephine Villafuerte, Vaccination Cluster head of the city bared the registration to the SAFEDAVAOQR is crucial so that their children will be integrated in the local vaccination system. She said that the vaccination for children now is on its second phase, with three vaccination sites namely San Roque Elementary School in Barrio Obrero, Vicente Hizon Elementary School at Barangay Sasa and the Almendras gym. “Children can be vaccinated on these sites, whether they are walk-ins provided they have registered at the SAFEDAVAOQR,” Villafuerte said.
