PEF eyes relocating Phil. Eagle Center to Brgy Eden

DAVAO CITY, May 30 (PIA)- The Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) is eyeing an emergency and possibly a permanent relocation of the existing Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos to a 50-hectare City Government property in Barangay Eden. Andi Baldonado, Development Manager of the PEF said due to threats brought by the Avian Influenza they are on standby to relocate the Philippine Eagles to a local government property. Baldonado said the recent Avian Flu infection in Magsaysay town which is 90 kilometers away from the center “practically brings the threat on their doorstep.” “A single case of this virus in the Philippine Eagle Center can potentially wipe out all 34 Philippine Eagles that we have right now,” Baldonado said during her guesting at the Kapihan sa Dabaw held at SM City Davao. “Right now, we have intensified bio-security measures which means people that have access to the eagles in the center are their keepers. 400 pairs of Phil Eagle left

DAVAO CITY, Feb. 17 (PIA)—There are approximately 400 pairs of Philippine Eagle left in the forest of Mt. Apo and other forested areas in Southeastern Mindanao, according to Jimbea Lucino, culture-based conservation manager of the Philippine Eagle Foundation. She said they encourage forest guarding to preserve the Philippine Eagle which has reached critically-endangered status. She attributed losing the eagles to the degradation of the environment, particularly the forests which serve as habitat for eagles and other wildlife. DENR-XI watches over eagle nesting site

DAVAO CITY, Jan. 19 (PIA)- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-XI (DENR-XI) said they will be constantly watching over the Mt Makibol-Alikoson Conservation Area (MMACA) in Marilog, Davao City which is an identified Philippine Eagle nesting site. A part of the conservation forest became controversial when various petitioners spearheaded by environmentalist groups opposed the granting of a tree-cutting permit to a private landowner on 12.2-hectare property located inside the MMACA. The cutting would involve 121 full-grown trees of various species. The cutting area was determined to be close to the nesting site of a Philippine Eagle. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte in a letter dated December 7 and addressed to DENR-XI declared the city government’s support to the move of the petitioners in opposing the granting of the tree-cutting permit in the area.
