DOH XI ensures heightened protocols against Omicron subvariant

DAVAO CITY, May 26 (PIA) - With reported local transmission of the Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 in the National Capital Region, Western Visayas, and Puerto Princesa, the Department of Health XI cascaded heightened protocols.

DOH XI Dr. Rachel Pasion briefed the members of the Regional Vaccination Operations Center (RVOC) XI that the country now implements a strengthened four-door strategy: through continuous global scanning for emerging variants; through strict implementation of border protocols; prioritizing the use of RT-PCR in testing and in symptomatics and their close contacts; and religiously sending positive samples for sequencing as soon as possible.

The current protocol does not require close contact with mild and moderate symptoms to be tested. But the enhanced response put in place is requiring RT-PCR testing for symptomatic individuals and their close contacts in the conduct of active surveillance.

Another enhanced response is by prioritizing the submission of whole genome sequencing samples from visitors from tourism zones or areas; individuals with international travel history; hospitalized severe and critical cases; and representatives of clusters.

The government is also calling for the strict implementation of the minimum public health standards in tourism spots and travel hubs such as bus stations, domestic airports, and seaports.

Meanwhile, the DOH XI is directed to immediately report any rapid increase in case counts and total bed utilization, ICU admission or utilization, oxygen utilization due to COVID 19 cases.

Healthcare workers in hospitals and field must also be provided with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, regular testing for COVID19, and up-to-date vaccination. (PIA XI/Frances Mae Macapagat)
