Tagum septage facility seen to sustain water quality amidst housing growth

DAVAO DEL NORTE, 25 April (PIA) — Septage management stands as “one good decision” for the benefit of Tagumenyos, City Mayor Allan Rellon said of the Tagum Water District (TWD) Septage Treatment Facility that would be designed to render fully mechanized system of desludging septage.

Attending  the recently held ground-breaking and project site blessing rites,  Rellon cited this TWD project as a realization to collaborative efforts of the city government of Tagum and TWD to protect Tagum City’s aquifer and  sources of water.

He recalled nurturing the concept of septage and sewerage management in the City of Tagum 15 years ago when he was still the  Vice Mayor, as he wanted to  foresee environmental protection policies in the midst of economic  growth of the city.

The current leadership of Tagum City Council under Vice Mayor Eva Lorraine Estabillo, passed the City Ordinance No. 922 Series of 2020, “ AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING A SEPTAGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN THE CITY OF TAGUM.

He credited TWD for pushing the City Government of Tagum to enact such ordinance while also lauding the TWD Board of Directors for venturing into a long term project giving substance to Ordinance  No. 922 S-2020  anchored on the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004  or Republic Act 9275.

Projecting an increase of 2,000 to 3,000 housing units in Tagum City in the next three years,  Rellon had seen ahead the demand not only  for septage management but for also water supply.

Kabalo ta kung naay residential houses di na man na pwede kung walay tubig,” he said pointing out the parallel  demand for TWD services”.

In a separate  interview, TWD President Arlene Adlawan told the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) that the facility  “sustainably maintains the quality of our water”.

“We  will preserve the quality of water in our aquifer; we can protect it by constantly cleaning the  septic tanks of our households, and in that way we can maintain the water quality we deliver to Tagumenyos. It is a sustainable solution,” she said.

TWD envisions this septage facility to become a fully mechanized system designed to become more environmentally friendly that ensure sanitation and prevent contamination of water sources.

On the same occasion, TWD Vice President Norma Pereyras said that this TWD project had gained the support of Davao del Norte Provincial Governor Edwin Jubahib to whom she had made known the importance of  the project not only for Tagum but for other LGUs of the province.

Meanwhile, TWD also opened its new and much bigger warehouse located in a 2,200 square meter lot to store all materials, property and equipment and to house the TWD motorpool and Water Meter Laboratory building.

It was inaugurated on Apr 20, 2022 on  the same day of the TWD Septage Treatment Facility ground-breaking ceremony. (PIA XI Jeanevive Duron Abangan)
