Diocese of Mati honors Ateneo de Davao



MATI, DAVAO ORIENTAL- The Diocese of Mati honored the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Davao University for its contribution to the digitization of the Caraga Church records during the Diocese’s culmination celebration of the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines which was held at the Mati City Baywalk Park on April 25.


The digitization project was undertaken by the Ateneo de Davao University Archives in 2021. The project involves digitizing the important historical records of the 138- year old San Salvador del Mundo Church located in the Municipality of Caraga, Davao Oriental.


The University worked on 19th century documents which consisted of records involving baptisms, marriage, confirmation,  deaths and financial accounts. The project covers 16 volumes and 2,500 pages. The digitized materials provided a wealth of cultural and historical information not just for the province of Davao Oriental but the whole Davao Region as well.


The San Salvador del Mundo Church was built by the Jesuits in 1877 and completed in 1884. The church was the base of the Jesuit mission during the 19th century.


Also during the celebration the Diocese thru Ateneo de Davao honored the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus for their role historical in spreading the Catholic Christian faith in Mindanao particularly in the province.


Rev. Fr. Antonio M. Basilio, SJ, Rector of the Davao Jesuit Community received both awards on behalf of Rev. Fr. Primitivo E. Viray Jr., SJ, Provincial of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus and Rev. Fr. Joel E. Tabora, SJ, ADDU President. 


Also on hand representing ADDU were Pamela R. Castrillo, University Archivist; Raul Vincent W. Lumapas, ARISEn (Ateneo de Davao Research in Information Systems and Software Engineering Laboratory)  Lab Director; and Virgilio Martin J.

Castrillo, the University Institutional Communications and Promotions (ICOMMP) Consultant.


The culmination celebration of the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines was participated by 1,200 Catholics of the Diocese. A procession, holy mass, cultural presentation about the history of the Catholic faith in the province highlighted the event which was capped by a fireworks display. (PIA/RG Alama)

DavSur expo features world-class local products, tourist destinations

Completed projects turned over to far-flung villages in DavSur

DAVAO CITY, Dec. 24 (PIA) – The provincial government of Davao del Sur has intensified its turnover of completed projects to provide convenience to the intended beneficiaries in the far-flung areas in the province.   Among the recently turned over was the covered space with stage worth P1,186,886.58 for the Sibulan National High School in the remote barangay of Sibulan in the municipality of Sta. Cruz.   An electrification project with 150-watt solar lights was also provided for the benefit of the barangay residents.   Governor Marc Cagas turned over the projects to the school teaching personnel represented by Isabelito F.
