Oscar award winning int’l film features Davao de Oro actor


DAVAO CITY- One of the casts in the film "Drive My Car"  the 94th Academy Award winner for Best International Feature  is Perry Dizon, an actor based in Maco, Davao de Oro.


Perry Dizon in the movie plays a theater actor performing in a multi-lingual version of Anton Chekov’s play “Uncle Vanya”. 


"Drive My Car" directed and co-written by Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi revolves around a theater director (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima) still grappling with the death of his wife, goes to Hiroshima to direct Chekov’s Uncle Vanya. On his trip he is chauffeured by a young woman named Misaki (played by Toko Miuri)


The film is based on Haruki Murakami’s short story of the same title. "Drive My Car" won the Best Foreign Language Film at the 79th Golden Globe Awards. It competed for Palm de Or at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival where it won several awards including Best Screenplay. The recent Oscar award is its latest crowning achievement, it is the second Japanese film to receive such award.


In an earlier interview with entertainment writers, Dizon recalled that on January of 2020 he got a text from the film’s talent coordinator in the country if he is interested to read lines from Uncle Vanya.


After several Skype reading sessions and auditions Dizon got the role in April of 2020 and flew to Japan on October 28, 2020 for the shoot. He joined several Japanese, South Korean, Chinese actors who essayed several characters in the Chekov’s play.


One of Dizon’s audition pieces he submitted to the producers was his seven-minute monologue in “Kaaway sa Sulod” (Enemy Within), a full-length film shot in Davao de Oro helmed by Dabawenyo filmmaker Arbi Barbarona.


Dizon is a stage and film actor, production designer and documentary filmmaker. Apart from being cast in several mainstream and independent movies in the country and overseas he also appeared in several Davao shot regional films such as in Arnel Mardoquio’s “Sheika”, “Crossfire”, “Riddles of My Homecoming” and Arnel Barbarona’s “Kaaway sa Sulod” (PIA/RG Alama)

Parents urged to register children to Safe Davao QR before vax

DAVAO CITY, February 22—(PIA) A local vaccine czar urged parents to register first their children aged five to eleven to the SAFEDAVAO QR before they can go to vaccine sites for inoculation. Dr. Josephine Villafuerte, Vaccination Cluster head of the city bared the registration to the SAFEDAVAOQR is crucial so that their children will be integrated in the local vaccination system. She said that the vaccination for children now is on its second phase, with three vaccination sites namely San Roque Elementary School in Barrio Obrero, Vicente Hizon Elementary School at Barangay Sasa and the Almendras gym. “Children can be vaccinated on these sites, whether they are walk-ins provided they have registered at the SAFEDAVAOQR,” Villafuerte said.
