DavNor’s Musa fabric to be featured in Earth Pageants

DAVAO DEL NORTE, March 30 (PIA)  —  The famed musa fabric  of Davao del Norte will soon be taking  centerstage in a series of  Earth Pageants that will soon  be held in the province.

After taking a milestone in  the prestigious New York Fashion Show in  February 2022,  Davao del Norte fashion designer Joy Soo is gearing for more shows of her Musa Fashion lines worldwide, and that include during the  staging of Earth Pageants in  January 2023.

Soo this morning  revealed of  having acquired a franchise of  the Earth Pageants which have five categories for Misses Earth,  Ms Earth for single moms, Teen Earth, Jr Teen  Earth and Little Earth.

“All these  pageants, since ako ang national director (since I am the national director), will be held here in Davao del Norte,  benefiting the musa advocacy,” she said during her guesting at KKK or Kasamtangang Katikaran sa Kalambuan radio program hosted by Dr. Mervin Jay Z. Suaybaguio, department head of  the Provincial Information Communication and Knowledge Management Office (PICKMO).

Soo has seen the opportunity of contributing to efforts of bringing Davao del Norte in the international landscape of  the tourism industry, on top of her continuing advocacy for the Davao del  Norte musa fabric which she is using as the featured material in her fashion line.

“ It's best that we should hold the Earth Pageant diri (here). And (in) Davao del Norte, na-relate man sad siya sa atong advocacy (still related to our advocacy) which is ‘musa’ made of banana fiber,” she said, while also recognizing Mindanao’s  bounty  of natural resources which, for her, is an  epitome of what Earth is all about.

“Moingon man gud ta ug (If we say) Earth for me Earth is Mindanao. Daghan  pa kaayo ta diri ug  mga natural resources nga wala pa jud na devastate (We still have a so much natural resources which are not yet devastated),” she said.

Soo confessed of always aligning her fashion shows with  her musa fabric advocacy which is benefiting the persons deprived of liberties (PDLs) in the three penal or jail institutions based in Davao del Norte: the Davao  Prisons and Penal Farms known as DAPECOL, the Provincial Rehabilitation Center based in Mankilam, Tagum City;  and the Correctional Institution for Women in Mindanao in Bobongon, Sto Tomas.

“Ang naa ra jud sa akong huna-huna ang mga piniriso ra jud nato ang atong mga persons deprived of liberty sa tulo ka jail institution sa Davao Region. (What has been in my mind are  our prisoners, our persons deprived of liberty in the jail institution in Davao Region),” she said.

She admitted having moments of feeling doubtful whether she can bear the burden of staging big-ticket  shows such that at New York Fashion Show, but she was inspired to carry on upon remembering the faces of the PDLs who had woven the musa fabric of her fashion line.

“Makaingon ko nga hala oi kayahon jud nato ni kay unsaon na lang. (I can only just say, hey we can do this coz what would happen),” she said referring to the PDLs who have been trained to weave the banana fibers for her musa fashion creations.  (PIA XI/ JEANEVIVE DURON-ABANGAN)
