Digos City Mayor urges parents to have kids get COVID-19 jabs

DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur, Feb. 23 (PIA) – Digos City Mayor Josef Cagas was grateful to parents who submitted their young children to get vaccinated against COVID-19, as he urged them to embrace the new normal.

In the vaccination rollout for the 5-11 years old pediatric population in the city late last week, Cagas stated “mga parents, salamat kaayo ani. Nalipay ko nga hinay-hinay na nato na realize nga ang COVID posible nga dili mawala sa atong kalibutan (parents, thanks so much for this. I am happy that slowly we realize that it’s possible that COVID ”

“We have to live, we have to co-exist with COVID and we have to get smarter than COVID. Kini ang atoang pinaka the best nga buhaton, magpabakuna ta,” he emphasized.

A total of 100 pre-registered kids received their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine during the vaccination kick-off held at the Digos Business Center.

The Digos City local government unit and City Health Office made sure that the children felt confident and comfortable during the rollout which turned out to be a children’s party where the young vaccinees got to enjoy free meals, sweet goodies and candies, ice cream, face painting and mini games.

Digos City Vice Mayor Atty. Johari Baña, who led the ceremonial vaccination of two kid volunteers, shared a message for the young vaccinees, “Your presence here is very symbolic because you will be encouraging more children and more parents to get vaccinated. You will practically become ambassadors of your classmates.”

Baña also raised the importance of the role of the parents in allowing their children to get inoculated.

“The vaccination especially among children, the parents have a big role. There are children who want to get vaccinated but their parents are hesitant because they still have doubts. They still believe on fake news and conspiracy theories,” he stated.

Cagas was happy to note that the inclusion of the 5-11 years old population would improve the vaccination rate in the city. The city targets 27,000 children from this age group, which comprises 27 per cent of the eligible population of Digos City.

“With the inclusion of this age group, taas taas na ang coverage and with that ma compensate nato ang kahinay sa senior citizens nato, hinay ang ilang vaccination (we will have a wider coverage and we can compensate the slow vaccination of the senior citizens),” the mayor stated.

He said that as of present the city has reached 55% of the fully vaccinated constituents, adding that “we have more or less 28% to achieve herd immunity.”

“I’m so happy nga ang acceptance sa vaccination sa matag Filipino ug labi na ang Digoseños nagka taas na ang atong kahimatngon ug consciousness bahin sa importansya sa pagbakuna,” Cagas said. (PIA-XI/Carina L. Cayon)
