Davao-Gensan-Bitung shipping route still existing

Indonesian President Joko Widodo and President Rodrigo Duterte during the launch of the shipping route in 2017

DAVAO CITY- The Davao City- General Santos -Bitung shipping route which opened in 2017 with much fanfare yet was not sustained, is still existing as it is service by a smaller shipping company.

This according to Assistant Secretary Romeo Montenegro, Deputy Executive Director of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) during its anniversary virtual press conference held on Feb. 16.

“Hanggang ngayong andiyan pa rin ang (up to now there still is the) Davao-Gensan-Bitung from time-to-time being serviced by Reefer Express Lines, A Filipino-owned company that deployed vessels not just for Davao-Gensan-Bitung but also for BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area)- Philippine routes,” Montenegro said.

The route which connects Davao City and General Santos City to Bitung in Indonesia was opened in 2017 with President Rodrigo Duterte and Indonesian President Joko Widodo attending the formal launch in Davao City.

However the original shipping company which served the route discontinued the service due to lack of demand.

Montenegro said the vessel it used was large for its market.

“The vessel deployed to serve the route during the launch in 2017 was a rather big vessel. It’s a 500 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent) capacity for a route that only has a demand for 50 to 100 TEU. So parang nag deploy ng jumbo jet sa isang short distance na route,” Montenegro said.

He said the route is served by smaller vessels on a chartered basis or when there is a high demand for shipping.

Also the MinDA deputy executive director bared that in the coming days a shipping company based in General Santos will make an announcement of a forthcoming shipping activity which will serve the Davao-Gensan-Bitung route. (PIA/RG Alama)
