Army chief cites need for sense of urgency

DAVAO REGION, Feb. 22 (PIA)--- “We need to  have that sense of urgency,”  Lt General Romeo Brawner, Philippine Army commanding general has ordered officers and elements  of the 10th Infantry “Agila” Division to do.

Addressing the Change-of-Command Ceremony of the Philippine Army Agila Division based in the Municipality of Mawab, Davao de Oro, Brawner pitched the call for urgency emphasizing the need to meet the order of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

“Kasi nga po sinabi ng ating Pangulo (because the President said) that by the end of his term we have to  end the local communist armed conflict. Hindi lang (Not only the) local communist conflict but even the  local terrorist operating  the in southern portion of Mindanao. Sabi nya na tatapusin na natin sila (He said that we have to end them),” he said.

He cited the daily reports on encounters of the Philippine Army infantry divisions nationwide, with local terrorist groups, as a “very good manifestation of dedication that we in the Armed Forces of the Philippines have given to the order of the President for us to accomplish that seemingly impossible task”.

“Kayang kaya po natin (We can do it!),” he said.

In line with this thrust, Brawner challenged newly installed commander of  the Agila Division, Major General Nolasco Mempin “to sprint towards the finish line” and carry out the call to ultimately end  the local communist armed conflict in his area of responsibility .

Brawner assured Mempin of total support from the Philippine Army Headquarters for all commanders, soldiers and for the civilian personnel of the 10th Inf Div. “Lahat ng kailangan n’yo para matapos nyo ang ating (Everything that you need to end our) race, we will provide,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brawner reminded the Philippine Army elements of the task given them during the conduct of the 2022 National Election to exercise  the right to suffrage but he cautioned them to keep personal their choice of favored candidates.

He took particular precaution on “sharing” and “liking” social media posts that could lead to identifying themselves with  certain candidates.

“Our task is to ensure that this election is safe, secure, accurate and free elections,” he said.

With regards to free elections, he reminded candidates present during the event, to refrain from paying “permit to campaign” to New People’s Army (NPA) known to have been extorting political candidates during elections.

He also made political candidates understand that personal and individual security concerns, lie in the hand of the Philippine National Police (PNP) while the Philippine Army is tasked to secure the area where they intend to do their campaigning.

On the other hand, he called on commanders to do on-ground monitoring during  this year’s election and not be contented staying at the operation center watching the unfolding of events and situations.

“Let us be more proactive and make our presence felt,” he said.

Brawner encapsulated his thrusts and tasks to the  Philippine Army nationwide in the acronym: SERVE, saying “we will take  care of our Soldiers and Enhance their individual skills and competencies,  bringing down the Resources to the ground to operation units, so that they will be capacitated to perform their mission effectively and efficiently; so that they will be Victorious against  the enemies; so that we will be able to perform our Election duties properly”.   (PIA XI/ Jeanevive Duron Abangan)
