IP student dorm, multi-purpose facility to rise in Talaingod

DAVAO DEL NORTE, Jan. 31 (PIA) – A dormitory for Ata  Manobo IP students  of Talaingod will soon rise thru the joint effort of the municipal government, the 56th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army,  and the 534 Construction Engineering Battalion.

Cooperating military units with Talaingod local chief executives led by Mayor Jonnie Libayao recently conducted a ground breaking ceremony and turnover of lot at Purok 6-B, Brgy. Sto.Nino, Talaingod Davao del Norte.

In a phone query, 56th Infantry “Tatag”  Battalion commander, Lt Col  Osmalik Tabayan said LGU Talaingod turned over on January 25  the 2.6-hectare parcel of land for the student dormitory and a multi-purpose facility that the Tatag Battalion intends to develop.

He explained the project as part of the Tatag IP Students’  Support Program that the 55th Inf Battalion is conceptualizing and will be pursuing in partnership with  the private  and civic sectors.

“We want to  provide IP students an  atmosphere conducive for learning,” he said in a phone interview during which he explained that the program, and the intended projects therein form is geared towards sustaining the delivery of services to former rebels whom the local and national government have successfully led to come  to the folds of the law.

Aside from the dormitory, other facilities to rise on the donated lot will include those for sports  and staff house of those overseeing the operation the facilities.

Corollary to this,  Tabayan said the 56th Tatag Battalion is nurturing seven Talaingod IP scholars whom the 56th IB has also trained on various agri-based livelihood ventures, “for them to stand on their own”.

The scholarship grant also forms part of the “sustaining effort” of the Battalion to  end local communist armed conflict,  Tabayan said.

Once “Tatag IP Students’  Support Program” mechanics and operation plan would fully be laid defined, Tabayan said he would be explaining such to interested partners to support the program rollout.  (PIA XI/ Jeanevive Duron-Abangan)
