Health expert tells parents to keep children away from public places

DAVAO DEL NORTE, Jan. 21 (PIA) --- “Do not bring your children to public places,” said Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Mitzie Lou Osabel of the Davao Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Osabel raised this warning in the Kapihan sa DavNor online taping during which she revealed noticeable increase in number of children being admitted due to  COVID-19 infection.  She was particularly referring to unvaccinated children under 12 years of age.

When protocol guards on children were recently lowered, Dr. Osabel noted the consequent rise in number of COVID cases among children not only in DRMC but also in private  hospitals which she has contact with as infectious disease specialist.

Basing on clinical cases, Dr. Osabel said some children found with COVID-19 were taken to hospitals due to diarrhea, chronic coughing, and fever.

A mother of still young children, she sadly noted seeing children in  malls and in other public places where she noted them taking off their masks and eating, making them vulnerable to contracting COVID-19.]

“Naay uban gadala-dala ug baby pa… Dili lang nato dalhon ang mga bata;  pwede ra man nga mag-enjoy ra sila sa balay (There are others they also bring even babies, let us not bring the children, they can enjoy by themselves inside the house),” she said particularly addressing parents and guardians.

She also cautioned parents and guardians not to  take chances as she noted that COVID-19 cases nowadays take the nature of Omicron.

Noting Omicron as four times more transmissible  than the Delta variant, she however said that Omicron has less dangerous  effects on patients than Delta, basing on studies and clinical reports.

She put high credit on vaccination, giving emphasis that such intervention has proven to spare COVID-19 patients from suffering “severely”.

However, she made the public understand that even the vaccinated are still prone to COVID-19 infection, making it “very necessary” to still adhere to  the minimum public health protocols of wearing mask, cleaning hands, physical distancing while adding the importance of ventilation and sanitizing the surroundings.  (PIA  XI/ Jeanevive Duron Abangan)
