DavOcc intensifies COVID-19 vaccination in far-flung barangays

DAVAO CITY, Jan. 5 (PIA) – The Provincial Health Office of Davao Occidental has intensified its assistance in the COVID-19 vaccination in the five municipalities of the province, in a bid to finally reach herd immunity.

The administration of the COVID-19 vaccines though has been part of the efforts of the PHO since the onset of the vaccination drive especially in the municipality of Malita, but starting this month the PHO is set to help in the vaccination activities of the other local government units.

“Our assistance is not just technical, not just monitoring, but the PHO has also established our own vaccination site and has been administering the vaccines as help to our LGUs,” said Prince Paraiso, PHO’s Health Education and Promotion Officer.

Paraiso said that after Malita this week, the PHO’s vaccination team will be going to Jose Abad Santos and Sta. Maria in the following weeks.

“Hopefully by February we can proceed to Sarangani,” he added during Monday’s episode of Gobyernong Balitaan radio program of the Philippine Information Agency Davao del Sur/Davao Occidental on Enery FM Digos.

As to reaching herd immunity, Paraiso said they could not guarantee a timeline considering the difficulties in administering the vaccines in the geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).

“The province is 80 per cent GIDAs. We have an island municipality which is also difficult to reach,” he stated in the vernacular, adding that setting foot on far-flung barangays also entails financial resources and workforce.

But despite these challenges, Paraiso assured that the PHO together with Rural Health Units and the local government units will keep on with the vaccination drive until all eligible population will be fully vaccinated.

“We are much willing to go more than a mile to continue with our vaccination,” he stated as he mentioned that they have also started giving booster shots.

As of December 16, 2021 data, Paraiso bared that 43.5% or 93,140 of the 214,000 eligible population are now fully vaccinated, while 52% or 111,641 have received the first dose.

“This is not the true picture of our percentage though. This may have increased by now,” he said as he cited the challenge of the vaccinators from the remote areas to transmit updated data due to the unavailability of internet connection.

Paraiso was also thankful to the Department of Health of Davao Region for sending additional doctors and vaccination teams to help the province.

As of January 4, 2022, the PHO has reported no new COVID-19 confirmed case, only three active cases and 11 new recoveries.

“We are thankful that our cases have decreased, but let’s not put our guards down,” Paraiso stated. (PIA-XI/Carina L. Cayon)
