DAVAO DE ORO, January 31, 2022 (PIA) - - An Infectious Disease Specialist and consultant of Davao de Oro Provincial Hospital urged the public, who are fully vaccinated, to get booster shots against COVID-19.
During the Virtual Forum on Omicron, Dr. Kathryn Uy Roa stressed that booster shots are needed to replenish the depleting antibodies against COVID-19 that were injected from the primary dose or doses.
“Nakita man gud sa studies nga after some time, nagamubo na ang antibodies (against COVID-19) sa atong lawas, so kinahanglan nato na isaka napud ang mga antibodies para ang atong level of protection taas lang gihapon against severe disease and death,” Dr. Roa said. (It was discovered in the studies that after some time, our antibodies (against COVID-19) in our system deplete, so there is a need to increase the antibodies so that we will have high level of protection against severe disease and death.)
Roa also explained that as of this moment, only one booster shot is recommended in the Philippines; however, this may change depending on future developments in the study of the virus.
“Sa karon ang datus nga nakita is one booster ang kailangan, pero di pa jud ta kasulti kung hangtod one lang ba gud na siya,” she said. (For now, data will show that one booster shot is needed, but we really cannot say if this is up to one shot only.)
On December 2021, Israel started giving second booster shots to their residents; however according to Dr. Roa, studies show there is no significant added benefit in terms of protection from the second booster.
Roa also revealed that some vaccine companies are now clinical trial stage on manufacturing booster shots specific to Omicron variant.
“Kani atong current vaccines na ginagamit man gud karon, gibuhat ni sila using the ancestral strain (from Wuhan, China),” she said. (The current vaccines we have now, these are made using the ancestral strain (from Wuhan, China.)
She said that Omicron Variant has the immune escape capability because its mutation comes from the spike proteins of the virus.
Roa expounded that the antibodies in the vaccines were created from the spike proteins.
The consultant also underscored that the vaccines will not prevent transmission, rather severe illness, and death.
The virtual forum was initiated by the Provincial Government of Davao de Oro and the Philippine Information Agency. (PIA XI, Michael Uy)
