Unvaccinated diabetics urged to get COVID shots

DAVAO CITY-  Diabetologists are urging unvaccinated diabetics to get vaccinated to protect them from the more serious effect of COVID-19, as people with uncontrolled blood sugar will likely have worse conditions when stricken with COVID-19.

If a diabetic is infected with COVID-19 mas worse iyang outcome as compared to a person na walay diabetes labi na sa diabetic na uncontrolled ang kanilang blood sugar, sila yung nagkakaproblema during the infection (They would have worse outcome as compared to a person without diabetes most especially those with uncontrolled blood sugar they are the ones who will be having problems during the infection),” says Dr. Grace P. Aquitania, diabetologist Philippine College of Physicians.

Meanwhile Dr. Veronica Avellanosa Racho the head of the Bariatric, Metabolic and Weight Management Center of the Davao Doctors bared that COVID-19 also affects the pancreas and there is a possibility that those without diabetes will develop the condition after being infected with COVID-19.

Dr. Aquitania sadly noted that many diabetics are hesitant to get their vaccines.

She said last July 8 of this year they held a web forum which discusses COVID-19 vaccination on persons and where they invited experts on COVID-19 vaccines and diabetes. She would refer the web lecture which is posted at the Facebook Page of Diabetes Philippines Davao Chapter.

“We greatly encourage most people especially those unvaccinated to get vaccinated for COVID. Because if they get COVID they usually get the worse symptoms sometimes it will become moderate, severe or critical na COVID compared to those controlled ang blood sugar levels nila and vaccinated sila sometimes asymptomatic or mild lang ang covid,” Dr. Racho said.

Dr. Racho said that many of diabetics who don’t want to be vaccinated have fears on side effects that vaccines will bring because  of their condition.

“That’s an irrational fear hindi yan totoo (that is not true),” Dr. Racho said..

Davao City currently has a prevalence diabetes rate of 4% to 5% or about 80,000 people in Davao City has diabetes. The Philippines has a prevalence rate of 7.1% or more or less 7.8 million people are diabetics. According to the International Diabetes Federation 1 out of 3 people have undiscovered diabetes.
