DOST XI highlights  Dabawenyo inventors, innovators

DAVAO City, Nov. 3 (PIA) – Science and technology regional director in Region XI Dr. Anthony Sales highlighted previous Dabawenyo winners of the Regional Inventions Contest and Expo during the One Davao Virtual Presser, a program of the Philippine Information Agency XI.

“We celebrate the RICE every two years as a way of recognizing the outstanding inventions and innovations of Filipinos,” Dr. Sales said.

The said competition and exhibit is co-organized by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the DOST together with the DOST regional offices.

It searches for the next roster of individuals to be included in the best and the brightest local trailblazers in the country who will compete in the national level invention contest.

As the DOST XI now selects regional RICE winners to compete in the national level, Dr. Sales took time to mention some of the previous winners and their contribution to the community through their innovative products.

“We have proudly produced many winners and outstanding inventors and innovators from Davao Region,” Dr. Sales said.

One of them is Aezar Cajegas who developed the REDDOPAC, a formulated cationic coagulant for water and waste water treatment that has won first prize in the 2015 RICE Likha/Creative Research Category and bagged the third prize in the national competition.

Cajegas also won in the 2017 RICE with this research, “Alcasol Pure Antibacterial and Antifungal Disinfectant” which is now being used by farmers to treat banana disease and as foliar fertilizer.

Researchers and innovators from the University of Southeastern Philippines also won in the RICE for developing the UH1 SHOFAR: Mass Notification System for Local Disasters. Their product, UHI SHOFAR, is an ICT-based early warning system that has alarm, public address and surveillance features. It aims to capacitate the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to strengthen the disaster mitigation and response efforts.

Dr. Sales also  cited Dabawenyo inventor Engr. Roderick Dayot who developed the technology called Pyroclave. This technology answers the need for a non-burn and water-free technology especially in treating medical waste.

“Engr. Dayot and his innovations have really imparted significant contribution to our society. We are very happy to have partnered with him in the conduct of the ARENA Resbakuna where almost 10,000 government employees and dependents have been vaccinated,” Dr. Sales shared.

Engr. Dayot provided the technology in the management of the medical wastes during the ARENA Resbakuna, the Nitro sterile technology. It is also non-pollutant as it does not emit toxic chemicals in the water and in the air.

The DOST XI has opened today the 2021 Regional Science and Technology Week Celebration and the Regional Invention Contest and Expo or 2021 RICE. (PIA XI/Frances Mae Macapagat)
