DAVAO CITY, Nov. 4 (PIA)- Tourism officials in Davao City are hopeful on the coming Christmas with COVID-19 cases on the downtrend and the subsequent loosening of restrictions.

“Now po kasi downtrend po talaga ang COVID-19 cases, the city wants to take advantage of this time by spurring yung economic activity for the city para makabawi (to recover),“ City Tourism Operations Office head Generose Tecson said during the virtual media launch of Davao Pasko Fiesta held yesterday (Nov. 3).

The lessening of COVID-cases and the increasing number of vaccinated Dabawenyos has resulted in the loosening of regulations.

These included the modification of the 24 hour liquor ban which is now only from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m., the lifting of the 9 p.m.- 4 a.m. curfew, the lifting of mandatory motorcycle and PUV barriers, and the voluntary use of face shields.

However Tecson said that people should still be careful and observe minimum public health standards as COVID-19 has not completely disappeared.

“We are also hoping that people will also be careful they will be responsible enough to follow minimum safety health standards, sila na mag-gauge kung comfortable sila sa mga places na may crowds,”

Tecson said she is keeping her fingers learned that people learned something from the previous surges of the pandemic.

For private sector tourism leader Renato “Gatchi” Gatchalian, president of the Davao Tourism Association (DATA), the COVID-19 downtrend bodes well for a brighter Christmas.

“Hopefully by December 1, Alert Level 2 na tayo,” he said optimistic of a lower alert level, which would mean lesser restrictions, allowing more economic activity.

Gatchalian said he observed during the recent weekend that people were going out and patronizing establishments.

Like Tecson he hopes that people despite the loosening of restrictions will still be responsible and disciplined to follow health protocols.

CTOO head Tecson said based on inquiries on social media, many would want to visit Davao City.

“There are people wanting to visit their relatives here, they are asking kung pwede na pumasok,” Tecson said.

She said with intrazonal travel now allowed she urged visitors to book on Department of Tourism accredited establishments so as to support legitimate tourism businesses. (PIA/RG Alama)
