Earlier today, 114,000 doses of Coronavac vaccines from Sinovac were delivered to the region on board Cebu Pacific Cargo DG 5811.
Last October 8, 64,350 doses of Pfizer BioNTech Comirnaty arrived at the DIA on board PAL PR 1809. A day earlier, 77,220 doses of the same brand of vaccine were received by the Department of Health XI (DOH).
In a DOH XI press release, the office received a total of 994,500 doses of Pfizer BioNTech Comirnaty as donated by the United States Government through the COVAX facility.
DOH XI Undersecretary Dr. Abdullah Dumama Jr. stated that “the acceptance of the donated vaccines clearly manifests a global participation and cooperation to put an end to this pandemic.”
The Director of the Health of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Michelle Lang-Alli was also quoted saying “ the United States has worked closely with the Philippine stakeholders throughout the pandemic to protect public health in strengthening local responses to COVID19.”
In a virtual acceptance ceremony, Davao de Oro Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy said, “ this is an advance Christmas gift for all of us and we will fully commit to help our national government achieve its target that hopefully by December, we will be able to reach 70 percent fully-vaccinated constituents in Davao Region and in our province.”
Health officers from the different Davao Region provinces and cities also expressed gratitude and relief on the arrival of the donated vaccines through the COVAX facility.
Davao City Health Officer Dr. Ashley Lopez shared that through the allocation, the city has been able to optimize and even boost up their COVID19 vaccine rollout and continue accomplishing their target. He is optimistic that Davao City with a target population of 1.2 million will be able to achieve herd immunity before the end of the year.
“When we had the surge during the last 4 months, our frontliners almost about to give-up and were very much overwhelmed with the number of cases we have in the province, the vaccination campaign was the hope that we cling on to. It was the silver lining in this pandemic. Despite the surge, someday this would end with all the vaccination efforts that we are doing,” Davao Oriental Provincial Health Officer Dr. Reden Bersaldo said.
The recent delivery of vaccines in the region are expected to be delivered to the different cities and municipalities.
The DOH XI emphasized that all individuals aged 18 years and above and who are not yet vaccinated may now go to their barangay for registration and to be given a schedule for vaccination.
While vaccination has been opened to the adult population, the DOH XI reiterated that vaccination for the priority groups especially the senior citizens and persons with comorbidities continues and is still being prioritized. (PIA XI/Frances Mae Macapagat)
