DAVAO CITY- Sustainable Communication is the new trend of thinking that government communicators have to take on, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Marfori Andanar (SMMA) says.
During his recent Davao Region provincial online radio guesting sortie, PCCO Secretary Andanar pitched for help of fellow media practitioners both in government and private practice to advance his “sustainable communication” advocacy.
“We keep on talking about sustainable agriculture, sustainable energy, sustainable lifestyle, sustainable marine diversity, sustainable development but we fail to talk about sustainable communication,” Andanar said in an interview with radio anchor Arnel Malindog over Radyo Rapido Mati (Davao Oriental), Aksyon Barangay radio program.
Andanar explained sustainable communication as a mindset that guides communicators of whatever platforms or medium to frame their messages on sustainability, particularly on “sustaining our country, our nation, our world for a more sustainable future para sa atong mga kabatan-onan (for our children)”.
“What I’m saying is that kining mga sustainability projects or goals sa atong nasud or sa atong kalibutan (these sustainable projects and goals of our country and the world) will be successful only if the thinking of our information officers, and broadcasters sustainable pud (are also sustainable),” he said.
Earlier in his discussion with Malindog, Andanar explained that the sustained advocacy and communication of the national government under President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, had been built on the concept of sustainable communication.
This is the big idea that has pushed PCOO and its allied national government communications arms to sustain the 2016 national communications policy that created the #LagingHanda Crisis Communications.
#LagingHanda Crisis Communications is usually activated during occurrence of typhoon and other forms of calamitous and disastrous situations of national scale, to communicate interventions and services of the government, in collaboration with private media networks and practitioners particularly those members of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas, Andanar explained.
This collaboration and synchronized moves of government media networks with the private media, was instrumental for the national government communication to readily get through airwaves and social media at the onset of the pandemic.
“Pagsugod sa pandemya only an activation ang atong gibuhat para makaandar ning atong gitawag nga #LagingHanda (When the pandemic started, only activation was what we did to power up the LagingHanda),” he explained.
Andanar further explained that the sustainable communication concept served as the foundation idea of pushing for media hubs in Mindanao, and in the Visayas, and even in the bid to set up the Government Communications Academy in Manolo Fortich in the province of Bukidnon.
“Finally the government has a communication academy, nga nakafocus lang gyud sa pagtudlo sa communication sa mga iformation officers sa barangay ngadto sa national government (that focuses on teaching communications to information officers from the barangays to the national government levels),” he explained.
Andanar also linked the Duterte Legacy Communication Campaign to sustainable communication concept in the bid of sustaining national government’s communication and information drive on the accomplishments of President Duterte. (PIA XI Jeanevive Duron Abangan)
