More than 400 coops in DavNor surviving amid pandemic

DAVAO DE NORTE, Oct. 21 (PIA) -- More than 400 registered cooperatives in Davao Del Norte strive to make their organizations continue to survive in the midst of the pandemic.

They are keeping up with the essence of celebrating  the National Cooperative Month with the theme "Kooperatibang Matatag: Tumutugon sa mga Hamon, Daan sa Pagbangon, Nagbibigay Pag-asa sa Makabagong Panahon!" aligned with  the 28th Provincial Cooperative Month 2021.

Despite the adversities brought by the pandemic, 65% of the total number of cooperatives in Davao Del Norte are active and 35% are inactive but were not dissolved, said Davao Del Norte Provincial Administrator's Office-Cooperative and Investment Development Division (PADO-CIDD) Engineer Humber D. Cabunoc.

"Ang atoang coop karon 436 na ang total, wherein ang active or ginatawag nato nga operation cooperative ningkabat na ug 65% of the total ug ang 35% mao kini ang ginatawag nato nga inactive (Our cooperatives count as of now are 436 in total where 65% are active or operational and the 35% are inactive)," Cabunoc said.

Meanwhile, KST Multi-Purpose Cooperative Chairman, Dr. Edelmira M. Recto shared the same sentiments of having struggles inside their organization due to the COVID-19.

"Kay one year naman gyud ni atong unseen enemy, si COVID-19 then kung makita nato ang hagit ani for the survival of the employees cooperative, musugot ta'g sa dili naa gyud sya'y effect sa atoang sector sa kooperatiba (Because we are already battling with this unseen enemy for 1 year, we can really see the challenge this has brought to the survival of the employees' cooperative. Whether we like it or not, it has really an effect on our sector, the cooperatives)," she explained.

However, Dr. Recto said that a cooperative can sustain its operation if it has good governance and cooperation among its members.

"But, ang akong nakita nga gawas sa atoang pagtoo, lain-lain ni atoang pagtoo, to our Lord, dako kaayo siya ang prayer. But ang contributing factor, one is ang good governance na makapalig-on sa atong pundok ug ang cooperation, mao bitaw nga gitawag ta ug kooperatiba (But what I saw aside from our faith and prayers to the Lord, though we have varying beliefs, the contributing factors are first, good governance that strengthens our organization and cooperation, that's why we are named as cooperative)," she argued.

Kapalong Market Vendors Multipurpose Cooperative (KAMAVEMCO) Chairman, Margarito G. Gonzales, also underscored the collaboration of the provincial government and the municipal government to support the cooperatives.

"50 ang among active member unya daghan napod karon ang musulod ilabi na kay ang kolaborasyon sa gikaingon na nako, with Gov. Edwin Jubahib down to the LGU, naa gyud ang ilang dakong suporta particularly sa coop (We have 50 members and many would like to join because of the collaboration of the provincial government and the local government unit which really support the cooperatives)."

Visayan Village Tagum Rural Waterworks and Multi-services Cooperative (VITRUWASCO) Manager Annalyn A. Samillano, a water utility cooperative was also among the panelists.(PIA XI Davao del Norte/jmda/Ezri M. Coda, Jr.)
