Higher prices for palay in Tagum City- CAGRO

DAVAO DEL NORTE, Oct. 27 (PIA) -- The City Agriculture Office (CAGRO) of the City Government of Tagum said it has addressed the problems of local rice farmers as it is now offering higher prices to local palays harvested, said Tagum City Agriculturist, Engr. Harold F. Dawa.

In a radio program today, Dawa explained how the City of Tagum helped resolve the problems of the rice farmers in Tagum City. He also explained how the local palays are bought at a competitive price.

"Ang atong mga local rice farmers, makita nimo karon, problemado gyud. And now karon, kabalo mo pilay buying? halos paliton nalang ug P10 to P12 per kilo ang palay. Ug karon amo man gyud nga gitotal ang production cost diri sa atong local setting naa sa P9.45 per kilo. Unya ug paliton ug P12? 2.55 centavos nalang  (Our local farmers are really problematic. And now the buying price for the palay is just 10-12 pesos per kilo. As of now, as per our computation, the production cost in the local setting is 9.45 pesos and if the buying price is 12 pesos, the profit will only be just 2.55 pesos per kilo),” said Dawa.

Acknowledging the problems of the rice farmers in the city, CAGRO initiated solutions to address them.

"Unang-una, naa mi mi gicreate nga "Agri-Runner", among marketing team sa among agri-business nga ang Tagum City, ang mga local farmers, target namo nga kami na ang mangita ug market para sa ilang mga bugas  (First, we created with our Agri-Runner under our marketing team of the agri-business campaign, all local rice harvested in the city will be marketed by us),” he explained.

"Second nga option namo, with our parnership sa NFA, nagakuha na sila karon ug dried nga palay at a buying price nga 19 pesos per kilo, mahal  (Our second option in partnership with the National Food Authority (NFA) is they buy dried palay at 19 pesos per kilo which is a higher price),” he added.

However, Dawa saw constraints over this program which the local government has already considered.

"Ang constraint lang, dili tanan barangays nga naay rice farms naay mechanical dryers. Mao na ang plano ni Mayor Rellon nga madungagan kining mga mechanical dryers aron diha na sila magpa-uga sa palay  (The only constraint is that not all rice farmers have mechanical dryers. That is why Mayor Rellon pushes to add more mechanical dryers for the farmers to dry their palays),” Dawa pointed out.

"Lastly, we are planning nga pinaagi sa ordinance, mahatagan nato atong local rice farmers ug window nga makabaligya sa market ug local rice lang gyud, dili man maalkansi ang mga retailers kay apil man sila nga mudistribute sa local rice (Lastly, we are planning through an ordinance to provide a market exclusively for the local rice to be sold in the city. The rice dealers will not be negatively affected because they will also be given local rice to sell in the market),” he said.

"In a year, naa man tay duha ka harvest so kaduha ta mag open window ana sa market aron maprioritized gyud sila (In a year, there are two rice harvest seasons so we will open the market exclusively for the local rice to prioritize them),” he added. (PIA XI Davao del Norte/jmda/Ezri M. Though we are young, though we are still around two-years old from the time we were launched, I say we are fortunate because we did not start from zero. We were a campus of SPAMAST such that there wer...
