DAVAO CITY, Sept. 21 (PIA) – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte
bared that the Department of Education Davao Region reached out to the local
government to prepare for the pilot face-to-face classes in public schools.
Announced in a radio interview earlier, the mayor shared that the LGU was asked to submit a list of public schools where face to face classes will be rolled out and which will be discussed in the city’s COVID-19 task force meeting.
“ The agreement is out if 182 barangays, they will be ranked according to risk assessment and the last three barangays in terms of risk assessment will be selected for the pilot face to face and dili tanan schools didto sa ilang barangay (not all schools in their barangay). Our initial submission will be one school for each barangay,” Mayor Sara said.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education posted in their social media page that President Rodrigo Roa-Duterte approved the implementation of the pilot face-to-face classes in 120 schools in low-risk areas.
The DepEd further states that the selection of pilot schools is based on the guidelines prepared by the DepEd and the Department of Health (DOH) to ensure the safety of the teachers and the students.
In the guidelines developed by both agencies, a class size for kindergarten will only be composed of 12 learners; Grades 1 to 3 with only 16 learners; while technical-vocational students in senior high schools will have 20 learners.
Only a maximum of three hours is allowed for Kindergarten to Grade 3 and a maximum of four hours for senior high school alternating both face-to-face and blended learning.
One of the conditions cited in the guidelines is that there must be shared responsibility among DepEd, DOH, LGUs, and parents. Concurrence of both the LGU and the parents are required before a school may form part in the pilot face to face classes.
The DepEd said that pilot implementation of limited face-to-face classes will give the government a ground experience on the operationalization and effectiveness of the protocols and contingency measures should there be cases of exposure or infection.
Further, the said agency hopes to identify the difficulties and gaps for operational refinements and assess the benefits of the blending of face-to-face classes with distance learning in terms of learning delivery and outcomes. (PIA XI/Frances Mae Macapagat)
