Sto. Tomas tricycle drivers receive various aid from government

DAVAO DEL NORTE, June 28 (PIA) – Pedicab drivers and operators in the Municipality of Sto. Tomas have received various assistances from the Local Government Unit (LGU), National Government Agencies (NGAs), and the Office of Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go recently.

On June 26 at the Municipal Covered Court, the team of Senator Bong Go distributed food packs, face masks, face shields, and medicine packs to 914 pedicab drivers and operators. Selected recipients also received bicycles, computer tablets while some received pairs of shoes.

As well, the Santo Tomas LGU handed out long sleeves, plastic barriers and other COVID-19 related merchandise to the beneficiaries.

This was made possible after Santo Tomas Mayor Ernesto Evangelista and Municipal Administrator Atty. Elisa Evangelista-Lapina asked the help of Senator Bong Go to provide financial assistance to the transportation sector which has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) provided financial assistance worth P3, 000 to the beneficiaries through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program, the department’s protective service program for the poor, marginalized and vulnerable or disadvantaged individuals.

On top of these, the Sto. Tomas LGU has partnered with Gas Island to help reduce the transportation sector’s gas expenses.

Pedicab drivers and operators will receive a gasoline fuel discount of P4.00 per liter at Gas Island gasoline station starting June 28.

The discount applies only to pedicab drivers who have received the “Tomasino Pedicab Driver” sticker from the Municipal Government of Sto. Tomas after having been validated.

To avail the discount, the validated pedicab driver must show their registered sticker--it must be posted in the vehicle's windshield for the Gas Island employee to validate. However, it must be noted that the sticker is not transferrable to other drivers.

Municipal Administrator Atty. Elisa Evangelista-Lapiña said that this partnership between the LGU and Gas Island is a “long-term commitment” for the benefit of the transport sector. (Jan Vincent Leuterio/PIA-XI with reports from Municipal Government of Sto. Tomas FB Page)
